From Classroom Idea to Real Travel Product
Welcome to BuddyBag!
We are a student company founded as part of the International Student Company program. Our goal? To create and launch a real product — something useful, feasible, and entirely run by students.
But this project wasn’t just about selling something. It was about taking an idea, making mistakes, adapting, and turning it into something real. And that’s exactly what we did.
Our Journey: From Big Ideas to Smart Simplicity
When we first started brainstorming as a student company, we aimed high — really high.
Our very first concept was something we were incredibly excited about: a 2-in-1 backpack system.
It wasn’t just any bag.
Our idea was to create a modular backpack where one smaller bag could click into a larger one. It would be versatile, sleek, and designed for travelers or students who wanted both structure and flexibility in their day-to-day carry.
We even sketched it out and began planning features, materials, and branding.

But as we researched suppliers and tried to move toward a prototype, we quickly realized something:
it wasn’t doable at our scale.
To make the 2-in-1 bag a reality, we’d need:
- Custom manufacturing
- Multiple suppliers
- A far higher budget than we had
Despite our passion for the concept, we faced the truth:
It was too complex, too expensive, and not feasible for a student-run company.
So we did what real entrepreneurs do — we pivoted. And that decision led us to something even better:
A simpler, smarter, and more achievable product: the BuddyBag Travel Gadget Sack.
Our second idea: vacuum-sealed travel bags.
This concept looked promising at first — practical, compact, and easy to market. But as we explored suppliers, we found that high-quality vacuum bags with pumps were either unreliable or far too expensive for our budget. In the end, it simply wasn’t doable for a student company like ours, both financially and logistically.. Another concept scratched.
And then came our BuddyBag Travel Gadget Sack.
Simple, useful, and achievable. A khaki-colored organic cotton bag, pre-packed with three travel essentials:
- A digital luggage scale
- A travel bottle set (airport approved)
- A soft sleep mask
- A black luggage tag
- A set of earplugs
This was something we could source, brand, package, and deliver with confidence. And it turns out… people love it.
What We Learned
This student company taught us much more than product design. It taught us about:
- Adapting when things go wrong
- Working with deadlines, real budgets, and real decisions
- Communicating with suppliers and customers
- Turning feedback into action
- Running a real business as a team
It also gave us the chance to create something we’re proud of — not just a product, but a brand, built from scratch.
